Handforth and Beyond

This section is dedicated to life beyond the Handforth camp. During the First World War, thousands of people were locked up in Handforth; hundreds more visited to inspect the camp or to service the needs of the prisoners interned there. However, this movement also went in the other direction. The Handforth camp exported many of its prisoners to a large network of working camps and also to local farms where they offered manual labour. As such, Handforth came to be at the very centre of a much larger war economy.
