Section two explores the main period of Handforth’s history when it served as a prisoner of war camp. Military prisoners had been present in the camp from its earliest days, but only started to arrive in large numbers during the middle of 1916. And by the end of 1916, the camp had been turned over completely to military prisoners as the earlier civilian internees were removed. During this phase, most of Handforth’s prisoners were captured Germans, though within this broad category considerable diversity remained.
